Ingredients
4 slices sourdough or rustic bread
2 oz cream cheese, softened
1 tsp fresh dill, chopped
1/2 tsp lemon zest
4 oz smoked salmon
1 cup shredded gruyère or mozzarella cheese
1 tbsp capers (optional)
1 tbsp butter, for grilling
Instructions
1. In a small bowl, mix cream cheese with dill and lemon zest.
2. Spread cream cheese mixture onto one side of each slice of bread.
3. Layer smoked salmon and shredded cheese onto two of the slices. Add capers if using.
4. Top with remaining bread slices, cream cheese side in.
5. Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat.
6. Grill sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
7. Remove from pan, let rest 1 minute, then slice and serve.
Notes
Substitute goat cheese for a tangier twist.
Add thinly sliced cucumber or red onion for extra crunch.
Pairs beautifully with tomato soup or a green salad.
