Ingredients
For the Topping:
2 medium oranges, thinly sliced
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp butter, melted
For the Cake:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk
Zest of 1 orange
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.
2. In a small bowl, mix melted butter and brown sugar. Pour into prepared pan and spread evenly. Arrange orange slices on top in a single layer.
3. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
4. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and orange zest.
5. Add dry ingredients in two batches, alternating with milk. Mix just until combined.
6. Pour batter gently over the orange slices and smooth the top.
7. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
8. Cool for 10 minutes, then carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate. Peel off parchment. Let cool and serve.
